Rayvon's path in music took shape once Bruce Brewster, performing as Rayvon, crossed paths with an up-and-coming Shaggy inside a New York studio while the former was transitioning from instrumental work into rap and reggae vocals. Their first joint effort produced the 1992 regional dancehall success "Big Up," which quickly drew both label attention and public notice to the pair. As Shaggy's profile expanded globally, Rayvon remained a steady presence, supplying featured vocals on the later Shaggy singles "Nice and Lovely" and "In the Summertime." The two shared stages across an extensive 1993 world tour that further fueled demand for Rayvon to step forward on his own. Long established in New York's reggae circles, he nevertheless kept working alongside Shaggy and producer Shaun "Sting International" Pizzonia on multiple tracks, including his own charting single "No Guns, No Murder." A Virgin Records contract followed, leading to the 1997 release of Hear My Cry, Rayvon's sole full-length solo album. The project showcased production from Sting International, Funk Master Flex, and additional contributors, along with guest spots by Shaggy, Maxi Priest, and Rhonda Davis. Rayvon's measured, soul-inflected phrasing and lyrical flow consistently foregrounded his awareness of social issues alongside an understated yet assured faith in human potential, optimism, and the enigmas of affection and existence. Following a period of lower visibility, he rejoined Shaggy for the chart-topping 2001 single "Angel," prompting renewed expectations that his trajectory would reach the levels long anticipated by industry watchers. That same year, sessions commenced for My Bad, the long-awaited successor to Hear My Cry.
