The Rebecca Riots, an acoustic folk trio based in Berkeley, California, draws its name from a mid-19th-century uprising against British authority in South Wales. Andrea Prichett and Eve Decker first crossed paths in 1993 while both employed at a summer camp, where they passed their evenings making music together before eventually asking Prichett’s guitar instructor, Lisa Zeller, to participate. The three musicians found the collaboration so rewarding that they formed a band and spent the following years cultivating an audience throughout the Bay Area. Their self-titled debut appeared in 1995 and was succeeded by Some Folks three years later. National touring in support of the latter recording brought them to wider notice, and when Live at the Freight and Salvage came out in 1999, Appleseed Recordings offered a contract that supplied the national distribution required to sustain their momentum. Gardener arrived on Appleseed in spring 2000, showcasing the same sensitive, socially conscious folk approach that had defined the group’s music throughout its first seven years.
