Biography
Renowned as Russia's foremost vocal ensemble, the Red Army Choir received its new designation in 1978 to honor Boris Alexandrov, who had led the troupe since 1946 and continued until 1986. Comprising a male choir alongside a mixed dance ensemble and full orchestra, this expansive collective gained worldwide recognition by securing top honors at the 1937 Paris Universal Exhibition. Traditional Russian folklore now incorporates numerous selections from their catalog, among them the pieces "We Are the Red Cavalry" and "Song of the Volga Boatmen." American Record Guide observed of the choir's 1994 self-titled release—produced with conductor Victor Federov and issued by Naxos—that "Naxos' sound is rich, full, vibrant, and spacious -- just like the choir itself."
