Redeye originated in 1970 when guitarist Douglas ‘Red’ Mark—previously part of the Los Angeles, USA, pop psychedelic outfit Sunshine Company—assembled a new lineup with David Hodgkins on guitar and vocals, Bill Kirkham on bass, and Bobby Bereman on drums. The rock quartet secured a deal with the modest Pentagram imprint and issued its debut single, ‘Games,’ toward the end of 1970; the track climbed into the national Top 30. Early the following year the band put out a follow-up, ‘Redeye Blues,’ which encountered resistance from numerous stations because of its subject matter: programmers took issue with the narrative of someone becoming intoxicated and then losing track of a hidden cache of drugs. Despite those obstacles the single still registered on the charts. No further successes materialized, and the group disbanded in 1972.
