Originating in Gelnhausen, the modest German town that once quartered the Monks while they served as American G.I.s in the 1960s, Redondo Beat absorbed influences from that band along with American idioms such as doo wop, girl group pop, and garage rock. The ensemble launched its run of retro-styled albums in the early 2000s, opening with the 2002 release Les Enfants Garagesques. When the Day Turns in Tonight arrived five years later. Roman Aul stayed the group’s unchallenged guiding force yet assembled a mixed-gender roster that included bassist Cornelius Springer, drummer Maximilian Schneider, and backing vocalist Katrin Marleen Einert; the last two of these musicians also played on 2011’s Meet Redondo Beat.
