Gisavo channels an explosive technical command of the accordion into Malagasy music, energizing traditions that reach far beyond the island. Percussive grooves supplied by longtime associate David Mirandon help shape an urgent dance style that folds in Portuguese and South African currents alongside the modern tsapiky sound popular among southern Malagasy electric ensembles. Rootworld characterized the approach as “a blend of styles from around southern Africa, strapped down roots music that, while clearly intending to be ‘pop,’ hangs on to the sources for dear life.”

Growing up as one of 13 siblings, Gisavo felt drawn to the accordion from childhood. At six he tried his father’s melodeon, only to be steered instead toward academic priorities. Although he honored that preference long enough to enter university, music continued to exert a stronger pull. After several seasons with amateur ensembles, he abandoned formal studies to work alongside Malagasy pop singer Landy and guitarist D’Gary’s group.

Relocating to Paris in 1990 placed him in the jazz collective Boho Combo. Victory in the RFI Decouvertes Competition, where he took first prize and a substantial cash award, finally allowed him to acquire an accordion of his own. Sideman appearances with Manu Dibango, Ray Lema, and los Tetes Brulees preceded his membership in the Corsica-based band I Muvrini. Following a recording session with D’Gary, Gisavo secured a contract with the French imprint Indigo/Label Bleu, which issued his debut album Mikea in 1997.
