The Regulators maintained a base in the Los Angeles region from the late 1980s into the 2000s, yet the group's sound and image evoke the Southern rock era of the 1970s. With long hair, beards, cowboy hats, leather vests, and cowboy boots, the members project the look of musicians who might have emerged from a Texas, Alabama, or Georgia biker bar in 1974, while their Southern-fried boogie serves as a direct homage to Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, the Outlaws, Molly Hatchet, and .38 Special. Polydor signed the band in 1992, leading to the release of their self-titled debut album, which featured the singles "Last Chance" and "Let It Ride" along with the track "Whiskey Fever," featured in the Steven Seagal action film Under Siege. Tragedy struck in 1993 with the death of founding guitarist Jimi Hughes. Following their departure from Polydor, the Regulators continued performing on the Southern California circuit, though another full album did not appear until Bar & Grill in 1998. During the new millennium, the lineup consisted of Ronnie Farrell on vocals and guitar, Johnny Barnes on lead guitar, Chris Turbis on keyboards, Lorenzo Delveckio on bass, and Mark Accevis on drums.
