Reijo Taipale ranks among Finland’s most enduring iskelmä artists, with his reputation resting chiefly on a deep affinity for tango. In contrast to its Central European counterpart, Finnish schlager tends toward somber, emotionally heightened ballads that blend Nordic folk traditions with Argentine tango influences. Born on March 9, 1940, into a rural farming household, Taipale began performing at twelve and dominated regional contests throughout his teenage years. His foremost inspiration was Olavi Virta, widely regarded as Finland’s greatest tango vocalist. One of his earliest successes arrived in 1962 with a definitive version of Unto Mononen’s “Satumaa” (Dreamland), a song later interpreted by Frank Zappa and referenced in 2000s hits by Maija Vilkkumaa and Tuomari Nurmio. Taipale has estimated that he has delivered the piece more than six thousand times on stage.

Although his career flourished through most of the 1960s, record sales declined during the following decade; nevertheless, promoters continued to book him regularly for Finland’s ubiquitous dance gatherings. These events—whether in indoor halls or on expansive summer stages—feature an eclectic mix of tangos, waltzes, foxtrots, jive, samba, rhumba, and related variations, reflecting a national fondness for social dancing. Taipale still maintains an active itinerary, appearing at roughly a dozen or more such functions each month. Since the 1980s his principal musical partner has been accordionist Erkki Friman.

Studio fortunes remained modest until the mid-1980s, when the gold-certified album Ruusu Joka Vuodesta initiated a run of strong releases. He collaborated with the instrumental group Mustangs, whose sound recalls the Shadows, and shared a platinum duet record, Kulkukoirat (Stray Dogs), with Topi Sorsakoski. He has also crossed into pop by rendering a Finnish adaptation of Kent’s “Dom Andra.” Across many decades Taipale has championed Finnish tango internationally, bringing his traditional repertoire to audiences from South America to Russia.
