Religious Knives craft an unsettling fusion of reverberant psychedelia by layering noise drones alongside buzzing guitars, organs, drums, bass, and competing vocal harmonies, evoking the frosty sonic landscapes from the 1960s. Drawing from acts such as The Velvet Underground, Goblin, and Popol Vuh, the group incorporates elements of horror-themed music and extended psychedelic explorations, with Krautrock providing the drive behind their prolonged, monotonous jam sessions. What began as a duo side endeavor for spouses Mike Bernstein and Maya Miller, both members of the improv outfit Double Leopards, evolved when they sought to explore fresh musical directions. Adding drummer Nate Nelson, formerly of Mouthus, helped unlock the ensemble's possibilities, prompting Bernstein and Miller to depart Double Leopards entirely and recruit a bassist following several tryouts. Through ongoing experimentation, the band settled with Brooklyn's No Fun Records, which issued their debut album Resin in April 2008.
