Biography
Renee Neufville shared the stage in Zhané alongside Jean Morris. The pair’s sweet and easy grooves, issued by the Motown label, supplied a key element of commercial R&B radio throughout the ’90s, with “Hey Mr. DJ,” “Groove Thang,” “Sending My Love,” and “Request Line” each reaching the Top Ten on the R&B chart. After Zhané disbanded, Neufville lent her skills to various artists, and Next, Will Downing, and Heather Headley all drew on her contributions. She gained greater visibility as a recording and touring participant in Roy Hargrove’s RH Factor, documented on the Verve albums Hard Groove (2003), Strength (2004), and Distractions (2006). Several years of further understated collaborations preceded her first solo single, the uplifting midtempo track “Watching Me,” which she issued in 2015 and which echoed the late-’70s/early-’80s-inspired sound she had explored with Zhané.
