The Seattle-based jazz ensemble Reptet came together in 1999, announcing its intent with the declaration: "To compose, interpret and improvise music that inspires growth through freedom and discipline." Prior to that, drummer John Ewing had worked across multiple groups spanning assorted styles until he began seeking players committed solely to jazz and improvisation. Open jam sessions eventually yielded a consistent core of musicians, among them pianist Stefan Nelson, who entered the fold late in 1999. Strong audience enthusiasm soon translated into bookings at a range of local jazz spots. Saxophonist Tobi Stone came aboard during summer 2000; bassist Evan Flory-Barnes followed in 2001, locking in Reptet’s steadiest configuration. Monktail Creative Music Concern released the ensemble’s self-titled debut CD in 2003.
