Biography
Return to Earth operates as a trio rooted in New Jersey and Brooklyn, built around vocalist Ron Scalzo, formerly of Q*Ball, guitarist-bassist-programmer Brett Aveni, and drummer-programmer-synth player Chris Pennie, who previously performed with the math metal group the Dillinger Escape Plan. Once Aveni and Pennie secured intervals from their separate endeavors in 2006, they initiated joint writing sessions whose results, after Scalzo joined the effort, supplied the material for the band's 2007 debut Captains of Industry, an album of forceful yet largely conventional heavy rock. Only during the preparation of the subsequent release Automata, issued by Metal Blade, did the trio enlarge its range by weaving electronic, industrial, and avant-garde textures into the songs. Separately, Pennie has also become a member of the art-metal band Coheed & Cambria.
