Following his 1969 encounter with Albert Collins, Neil Downs resolved to commit his entire life to music. Adopting the stage name "Reverend" Neil Downs, he launched into performances of blues and rock guitar throughout the Seattle region. Years of blues-based rock playing, combined with sessions alongside figures such as Henry McCullough (Paul McCartney, Joe Cocker) and Jerry Scheff (Elvis Presley, Elvis Costello), eventually prompted him to commit his accumulated songs to tape. The resulting project, American Friend, represented his debut proper and reached the public in 1999. Once touring for American Friend concluded, he entered the studio with Lahna Deering, the 19-year-old guitarist from Alaska who had sought out the Reverend specifically for production guidance in 2001.
