Revival Black came together in Liverpool, U.K., in 2018 by drawing on 1970s and '80s hard rock, classic rock, and blues-rock. Vocalist Dan Byrne linked up with the remaining members of Black Cat Bones to launch the high-energy new project after that band's frontman Jonnie Hodson stepped away. Guitarists Alan Rimmer and Adam Kerbache, bassist Jamie Hayward, and drummer Ash Janes had already spent five years with the earlier group, which closed its run by self-releasing the EP False Promises and Wasted Time in February 2018. Revival Black placed its own debut single, the bluesy "Hold Me Down," by the end of the year. April 2019 brought the Guns N' Roses-inspired "Wide Awake," after which the band traveled to Ibiza to top the acoustic bill at HRH Road Trip. Several further singles preceded the self-released October arrival of the debut album Step in Line, which placed the group inside the New Wave of Classic Rock movement.

When the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic arrived, Revival Black kept in touch with listeners through online live sets, one of which—a September lockdown performance at Tamworth's The Live Rooms—was issued that December as Live in Your Lounge. The bulk of 2021 was spent touring the U.K. and returning to the studio. Those sessions first yielded the chugging, riotous, bombastic single "Believe" in January 2022. The track appeared on the second studio album Under the Light that August, joined by the additional singles "Take You Out," "See You Again," "Broken Home," and "Hemispheres." Byrne departed within weeks of the release, at which point Kim Jennett of Voodoo Blood took over lead vocals so the band could meet its remaining live obligations for the year.
