Biography
Following his 2010 departure from Chairlift, Aaron Pfenning redirected his energies toward Rewards, the solo endeavor he had maintained since 2003. Over his half-decade tenure in Chairlift, Pfenning had handled lead guitar, backup vocals, production duties, and co-writing credit on nearly all material, among them the hit single “Bruises.” He carried those same responsibilities into Rewards, merging the atmospheric, 1980s-steeped electro-pop that had defined his former band with a hushed, whispery acoustic sensibility. Seeking exposure for the new tracks, Pfenning joined We Are Scientists as support on their 2010 North American dates. He also issued early Rewards releases, beginning with the fall 2011 12-inch “Equal Dreams” on DFA Records, which featured guest vocals from Solange Knowles and Devonté Hynes of Blood Orange, while continuing work on a debut full-length.
