During the closing months of 1926, Bing Crosby, Al Rinker, and the multifaceted Harry Barris—who worked as singer, songwriter, arranger, and pianist—established the vocal trio Rhythm Boys. Serving as featured vocalists for the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, widely regarded as the most popular band of the 1920s, the group contributed to numerous recordings by the ensemble, among them the hit songs "My Blue Heaven" and "Ol' Man River." Their association with Whiteman led to an appearance in the 1930 film King of Jazz, after which the Rhythm Boys remained on the West Coast to perform on radio broadcasts with Gus Arnheim & His Orchestra. They next took the stage at L.A.'s celebrated Cocoanut Grove, continuing there until Bing Crosby launched his solo career.
