Biography
A Red Dirt country performer blending glossy arena-rock sensibilities, Rich O'Toole cultivated a loyal regional audience across Texas throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s. Born in Houston, he first picked up an instrument during high school yet only committed fully once enrolled at Texas A&M. Following gigs at numerous fraternity parties and local clubs, he issued his independent debut Seventeen in 2007; its modest traction prompted a move to Smith Music Group for the Mack Damon-produced follow-up In a Minute or 2 in 2008. Three years afterward O'Toole joined Average Joe's Entertainment and aimed for broader exposure on Kiss of a Liar, an album featuring guest spots from fellow Texas artists Josh Abbott and Pat Green that reached number 73 on Billboard’s country albums chart. He founded his own imprint, PTO, in 2013, and the label’s inaugural release was the fourth studio set Brightwork, recorded with Ilya Toshinsky, who would serve as a recurring creative partner in subsequent years. After that project O’Toole relocated temporarily to Los Angeles, where the majority of tracks for the 2014 album Jaded were written. A three-year interval—marked by the rollout of Texas-themed emoji packs and the launch of an apparel line—separated Jaded from American Kid, a March 2017 effort that included multiple songwriting contributions from Evan Gamble.
