Leveridge directed most of his creative efforts toward the commercial stage, producing collections of vocal pieces along with convivial drinking songs, airy aria-style numbers inserted between acts, and additional numbers that followed full productions, a theatrical innovation known as the after-piece. His powerful and supple voice, especially during the period when Purcell could write for him, placed him at the forefront of London's theatrical scene for his entire career. Even during stretches when new roles arrived infrequently, audiences continued to support him, drawn by the calibre of his singing as well as his yearly benefit concerts and straightforward character. Across an unmatched run he assumed more than fifty distinct parts.
