Richard Stagg, a flutist trained in Western traditions, holds a position with London’s BBC Symphony Orchestra. In the early 1980s he embarked on self-directed study of the shakuhachi, relying solely on books and recordings. His growing passion for the instrument eventually led him to study under Yoshikazu Iwamoto, a former pupil of Katsuya Yokoyama who was then living in England. Beginning in the early 1990s he has appeared in numerous concerts, among them several engagements in Japan. He also belongs to the Yamato Ensemble, whose first performance occurred in Yokohama in 1990; the group’s remaining members are Kikuko Satoh and Aiko Hasegawa, both performing on koto, shamisen, and voice.
