Biography
The duo of Andrew Willshaw and March Ritchie, based in Lanarkshire, U.K., took the name Richie Cunningham from the central figure in Happy Days when they formed the project in 1993. Their start came after an inebriated night spent watching American Music Club, which directly yielded the first demo, Vegan Sexbomb. Before 1994 ended they laid down two further cassettes of lo-fi noise pop styled after Daniel Johnson, titled Gavin Hogg Sex God and Bring Me the Head of Gavin Hogg. Lyrics focused on drinking, Anthony Hopkins, and fanzines, after which Richie Cunningham released two more split EPs—one issued independently with Elephantcopter and the other with Pernath in 2000.
