Rick Fielding, originally from Montreal, Quebec, developed an early passion for the sounds pioneered by Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, and Bill Monroe. After exploring several conventional career paths, he committed fully to life as a folk singer. His move to Toronto in 1969 led to rapid recognition within the Canadian folk community, where he performed alongside contemporaries including Tom Paxton, Ian and Silvia, and Gordon Lightfoot. A skilled interpreter of both modern and traditional material across country, folk, and ballad styles, Fielding also spent time with the Gangreen Boys, among Toronto’s earliest bluegrass ensembles. Recognized as an award-winning songwriter, he supports his smooth baritone with guitar, banjo, mandolin, autoharp, and dobro. The 1995 release of Lifeline on Folk Legacy brought positive notice and expanded his reach through appearances at festivals and clubs across the United States. In 1999 Borealis Recording Company issued This One’s The Dreamer, an engaging blend of traditional and contemporary influences. Now based in Ontario, Canada, Fielding conducts musical workshops and presents the Acoustic Workshop program on CIUT-FM 85.5.
