Biography
Born in Chile to Argentinean parents who relocated soon afterward to the U.S., guitarist Rick Udler absorbed Brazilian musical influences when his father’s later job posting took the family there. In 1982 he returned to the States, pursuing jazz guitar studies across New Orleans, Los Angeles, and Miami before heading back to Brazil five years afterward. Settling into the local circuits of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, he formed a musical alliance in 1990 with vocalist Maria Alvim. The pair toured throughout the country, frequently joined from 1993 onward by percussionist João Parahyba, while Udler also pursued assorted composing assignments. Their first album, Rhythm and Romance, appeared on Malandro Records in 1998.
