Biography
Henry Lee Owens, most widely identified as Riddlore across a range of spelling variations and other aliases, functions as a seasoned producer and an inventive rapper whose presence has helped shape Los Angeles underground hip-hop since the 1990s. Early on he hosted the city’s open-mike workshop Project Blowed and, under the name Rhymin Riddler, contributed both solo and as part of C.V.E. (Chillin Villain Empire) to the workshop’s first spin-off compilation, issued in 1995. In the years that followed he began releasing understated solo material while simultaneously supporting dozens of peers, among them Aceyalone and Busdriver. A wider listenership discovered him without fanfare in 2017 through the beat tape Afromutations. Captured two years earlier in Kampala and issued by Nyege Nyege Tapes, the imprint headquartered in Uganda’s capital, the project fused African field recordings with bass music.
