Biography
An affinity for comic books and 78 rpm discs drew Armstrong into the Cheap Suit Serenaders. He participated in the San Francisco Bay area underground comics scene, where he created titles such as Mickey Rat and The Couch Potatoes. After learning that fellow cartoonist Robert Crumb also enjoyed music from the 1920s and 1930s, Armstrong enlisted longtime acquaintance Al Dodge, and the three began performing together simply for amusement. Like most of the Suits, Armstrong performed on multiple instruments, including guitar, accordion, and musical saw. He remains active with the Cheap Suit Serenaders, though their engagements remain infrequent.
