Robert Dobyne fronted the Chicago soul ensemble the Artistics as lead vocalist throughout the closing years of the 1960s, though his most lasting contributions emerged in the realm of songwriting. Partnerships with composers Robert Staunton and Charles Jones produced material such as “Say You,” which the Temptations placed on their 1966 album Getting’ Ready, and “Never Leave Your Baby’s Side,” which Martha and the Vandellas recorded the year after.

A lifelong Chicagoan, Dobyne entered the Artistics in 1963, well after vocalist Major Lance had formed the group at Marshall High School in 1958. His velvety baritone appeared on singles including “Get My Hands On Some Lovin’,” yet he exited after twelve months, at which point ex-El Diablo vocalist Marvin Smith assumed the role.

Although the Artistics later registered a minor hit with “I’m Gonna Miss You” in 1966 and stayed active until 1973, Dobyne receded from public view.
