Biography
Distinguished from the modern-day classical composer who shares his name, Robert Martin works as a cellist with past membership in the Bard Festival String Quartet as well as the Sequoia String Quartet. While he has appeared on scattered sessions devoted to pop and vocal repertoire, his central focus remains the classical canon, especially Beethoven’s chamber works. Together with Robert Winter the cellist prepared the well-regarded volume The Beethoven Companion, issued in paperback during 1996.
Further recording projects have placed him in music by Prokofiev and Ravel, two markedly different compositional idioms. In 2000 Martin appeared on a Centaur label disc devoted to Albert Roussel’s chamber output. The violinists Laurie Smukler and Patricia Sunwoo join violist Ira Weller as his colleagues in the Bard College ensemble. Additional musicians and a recording engineer who also answer to the name Robert Martin can be found elsewhere in the classical field.
