Growing up enamored with the eclectic sounds of Doc Watson, Leo Kottke, Jimmy Page, and Greg Ginn inside a tiny Minnesota town that the artist himself once labeled "the sociological equivalent of the color brown" offers insight into how singer/songwriter/guitarist Robert Skoro forged his singular brand of enigmatic indie pop. Although his heroes earned renown as guitar icons, Skoro discovered that his own talents leaned toward songcraft rather than aggressive riffing. A random encounter at age 17 with kindred spirit Mason Jennings led to Skoro contributing guitar to the sophomore album Birds Flying Away, sharing production duties on the follow-up Century Spring, and logging four years as a member of Jennings’ road ensemble. Skoro launched his independent career in 2002 via the Merciful label’s release of Proof, an effort that earned favorable notices, particularly for its echoes of Wilco. He resurfaced three years afterward with That These Things Could Be Ours, now issued through Yep Roc.
