Robin Finck ranks among Trent Reznor’s steadiest collaborators, instantly recognizable onstage in head-to-toe black, his dreadlocks pulled tight and his skin caked with mud. In the stretches when Nine Inch Nails fall silent, he has lent his talents to several projects that earned widespread critical praise.

Finck entered the world on November 7, 1971, and began playing guitar while still young. He performed in various unsigned bands around his hometown before stepping in for Richard Patrick on Nine Inch Nails’ road lineup. His debut outing with the group came during the expansive Self Destruct tour, which included the band’s celebrated set at Woodstock II. Once that trek concluded, he accepted the role of musical director for Cirque du Soleil and held the post for almost two years.

With no fresh Nine Inch Nails material on the horizon, Finck became part of the reconstituted Guns N’ Roses in 1998. Though he recorded on multiple tracks and was presented as a permanent member, repeated postponements kept the album from release, prompting his return to Nine Inch Nails for the Fragility tour. He has since rejoined Guns N’ Roses for occasional live dates and is slated to appear on their long-awaited Chinese Democracy album. Finck also contributed to the self-titled debut by Impotent Sea Snakes, yet he continues to place Nine Inch Nails at the center of his commitments.
