The 1963 ballad "Wonderful Summer" brought fame to pop singer Robin Ward, born Jacqueline McDonnell in Hawaii in 1941. Her early years unfolded mainly in Nebraska before she established herself as a Los Angeles session vocalist under the married name Jackie Ward. For her debut solo single on Dot, "Wonderful Summer," she drew the name Robin from her daughter, deeming it better suited to the teenage listeners the record aimed to attract. A richly dramatic standout in the girl group tradition, the track climbed to the number 14 position a week before the Kennedy assassination. Ward followed with five further singles for Dot yet never matched that early achievement.
