Rockabye Baby!

Since 2006, Rockabye Baby! has supplied instrumental lullaby renditions of songs by major recording acts to ease infants and their trend-conscious parents into restful sleep. The project opened with debut volumes devoted to Coldplay, Metallica, and Radiohead, then broadened to encompass the Beatles, Bob Marley, and Björk before the decade closed. Its initial anthology, Good Day, Goodnight, arrived in 2011 and spotlighted the characteristically gentle keyboard-and-bell arrangements. Issuing more than half a dozen titles annually, the series saluted Prince in 2012, David Bowie in 2014, and Tom Petty in 2018. Its strongest commercial showing to that point came with 2017’s Lullaby Renditions of Justin Timberlake, which reached the Top 20 on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart. Later releases addressed Marvin Gaye in 2021, Blake Shelton in 2022, and Lauryn Hill in 2023.

Lisa Roth, an executive at Los Angeles-based CMH Label Group and sister of Van Halen’s David Lee Roth, originated the concept. The series launched on August 29, 2006, via simultaneous issues of Lullaby Renditions of Coldplay, Lullaby Renditions of Metallica, and Lullaby Renditions of Radiohead. Andrew Bissell and Steven Charles Boone ranked among the frequent early contributors. Word of the project spread after collections of material by the Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, and the Cure appeared through the end of the decade. The five-year-anniversary set Good Day, Goodnight, released in 2011, paired several previously unreleased tracks with a double album’s worth of earlier selections.

Throughout the 2010s the series continued to gain traction, charting at number 25 on Billboard’s Kid Albums survey with 2017’s Lullaby Renditions of the Doors. The Justin Timberlake collection later that year climbed to number seven on the Kid Albums chart and number 18 on the Independent Albums chart. Lullaby Renditions of the Beastie Boys peaked at number eight on the kids’ chart in 2018, while the 2019 Weezer set returned the project to number seven. In 2021 the series covered Dolly Parton, the Weeknd, and Panic! At the Disco, together with the full Marvin Gaye album What’s Going On. Lullaby treatments of Blake Shelton, J Balvin, Sia, and OutKast followed in 2022. The following year the series marked the 25th anniversary of Lauryn Hill’s 1998 solo album with a lullaby version of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
