Drawing upon assorted creative wellsprings, Rodrigo Leão forged a personal method of composition that occupied the space between progressive impulses and experimental electronic textures. A leading composer and performer in Portugal throughout the late 1990s, he launched his professional path by collaborating with several of the nation’s most influential ensembles. His earliest affiliation was with Sétima Legião, a collective that offered novel directions for Portuguese modern pop at the start of the 1980s. Three years afterward he joined Madredeus, another landmark project originating on Portuguese soil, where he handled keyboard duties. Only in 1993 did he issue his first solo album, Ave Mundi Luminar. That recording wove together diverse strands, from classical sources to contemporary downbeat atmospheres, thereby revealing his distinctive gift for songwriting. With Teresa Salgueiro supplying the vocals and the lyrics rendered in Latin, the album secured notable recognition across Europe. The following year Leão left Madredeus behind, thereafter devoting himself exclusively to independent work. His second album, Theatrum, reached stores in 1995 and once more displayed his singular compositional voice by tracing paths that merged electronic elements with world-music colors. More than five years later, in 2000, he delivered his third release, Alma Mater, again earning widespread acclaim.
