Biography
Rodrigo Ruiz, working as both composer and conductor, first captured his refined and melodic chamber compositions on disc with the 2017 release An Everlasting Dawn. That project blended vocal selections alongside works for solo piano. His initial appearance on the Billboard rankings arrived in 2021 through Behold the Stars, introducing his piano trio and violin sonata. An enthusiastic reader and writer as well, Ruiz prepared his own Italian version of Shakespeare's King Lear expressly to underpin an opera libretto.
Born and raised in Tijuana, Mexico, he produced his earliest piano sonata at age fifteen while training with Zarema Tchibirova. Numerous solo piano pieces followed before he expanded into art song and chamber music. Soprano Grace Davidson, pianist Christopher Glynn, and cellist Alison Farr performed on the 2017 album An Everlasting Dawn. The experience prompted him to write the song cycle Venus & Adonis for Davidson in the years that followed.
Behold the Stars marked his first outing on Signum Classics in 2021, presenting the same piano trio and violin sonata with violinist Kerenza Peacock, cellist Laura van der Heijden, and pianist Huw Watkins. The recording reached number 13 on the Billboard Traditional Classical Albums chart.
