Biography
Originating from Australia, Rohan Newman crafts bright, effervescent house sounds under the alias Roland Tings. His output merges deep house with expansive techno, relying on driving rhythms, uplifting melodic lines, and hallucinatory textures that sometimes incorporate subtle notes of melancholy. He first appeared in the early 2010s via releases on 100% Silk and Internasjonal, later broadening his palette through Cascine material that occasionally embraced more song-oriented, pop-leaning structures, as heard on the 2019 album Salt Water.
Near the start of the 2010s, Newman began performing at house parties and clubs around Melbourne, quickly drawing notice abroad. Los Angeles-based 100% Silk issued his debut 12-inch Milky Way in 2012 and followed it with the Live in Thornbury cassette in 2013. That same year, Club Mod put out Tomita's Basement while 1080p released the experimental EP Brain Foam, a collaboration with Bronze Savage. In 2014 the track "Swimmer" appeared on Cut Copy's Melbourne-focused dance compilation Oceans Apart, and in 2015 Internasjonal released Roland Tings' self-titled debut LP.
After extensive touring that included support dates with Jamie xx, Chrome Sparks, and Com Truise, Newman issued his first Cascine release, the 2017 EP Each Moment a Diamond. It featured the notably pop-inflected "Higher Ground" with Nylo, a direction continued on the standalone single "One Hundred" featuring HIGH HØØPS. During much of 2018 and 2019 he resided in an isolated dwelling within Southern Australia's Otway National Park amid forests, waterfalls, and beaches. Drawing on field recordings from those surroundings, he delivered his second full-length, Salt Water, in 2019.
