Biography
Rollkicker Laydown functioned as something like a post-hardcore counterpart to the Traveling Wilburys, although the analogy falls short. The brief project nonetheless brought together alumni from Government Issue, Gray Matter, and Wool. Guitarist Tom Lyle, occasionally viewed as the Jeff Lynne figure in the lineup, joined bassist/vocalist J. Robbins, then still active with Jawbox, drummer Peter Moffett, and background vocalist Geoff Turner. They linked up with post-punk producer Iain Burgess, celebrated for his earlier efforts with Effigies and Big Black, to cut the 1993 single No Voices in the Wire on DeSoto, the imprint overseen by Robbins’ Jawbox associates Kim Coletta and Bill Barbot. Both tracks on the release stood equal to standout passages from the musicians’ more established and serious prior work.
