Biography
Having performed with multiple rock groups, Rory Carlile and Neil Higgins, both from Ireland, relocated to London in 1989 and connected with Justin Underhill from Leeds to establish Rootless. The trio combined their equipment and started issuing house recordings on the Deep in It imprint they founded themselves. In 1994 Rootless entered a deal with Mark Jones's Wall of Sound imprint, issuing the debut EP Mental Spiritual. Even though its tracks dated back as far as two years, the release captured the prevailing trip-hop sound of the moment and justified a longer project from the group. That project, Rotten Wood for Smoking Bees, therefore surfaced in 1995.
