In the early 1970s singer/songwriter Rosa León launched her stage career. She joined musical partner Jorge Krahe to deliver socially and politically pointed satirical material at cafes, universities, and assorted intimate spaces, appearing under the name Rosa y Jorge. Although the pair developed their repertoire jointly, León’s voice alone appeared on the first recordings. Her following expanded and Krahe eventually withdrew altogether. Those initial tracks, among them the debut LP De Alguna Manera, were issued by the Aute label. A television appearance shortly afterward redirected her trajectory. The broadcast, later released as the album Cuentopos, presented León singing children’s material and yielded lasting songs such as “Cancion de la Vacuna,” “El Gato Grande,” and “Cancion Para Vestirse,” which young listeners across age groups continued to recall for years. She came to be recognized as one of Spain’s foremost children’s artists. Her 1978 album Tiempo al Tiempo was followed five years later by Rosa Se Está Buscando en el Espejo, during which her popularity experienced a brief, modest decline. León subsequently returned to politically progressive folk with the feminist-leaning Amigas Mias and Entre Amigos, her first adult-oriented releases in some time. Later projects have consisted of re-recorded and repackaged selections from her earlier children’s catalog. Although she is no longer actively composing or recording, several newly issued collections document her pioneering contributions to younger audiences.
