Born to British folk icons Rick Kemp and Maddy Prior of Steeleye Span, Rose Kemp first explored her parents’ musical world by writing songs and performing with her mother’s trio at fifteen, followed by the 2003 solo release Glance. Only afterward did she recognize her deeper pull toward harder-edged electric guitar-driven rock. With assistance from members of the Oxford-based band the Fourers, she self-released a mini-album, then relocated first to London and later to Bristol, where she cultivated a devoted local audience. Because her band remained in the capital, Kemp chose to perform and record alone, layering looped vocals to enrich the harmonies and texture of her stage shows. Early in 2006 she began shaping the album A Hand Full of Hurricanes, and shortly afterward assembled a fresh group for touring. Issued by One Little Indian in 2007, the record reached listeners in both the U.K. and the U.S.
