Following the 1996 dissolution of the experimental rock outfit Thela, Rosy Parlane and Dion Workman formed Parmentier, a venture that continued only until 1998. At that point Parlane turned his attention toward solo explorations of soundscapes, tape loops, and field recordings. Later that same year he issued three self-released 7"s titled sequentially #1, #2, and #3, which Sigma Editions later gathered as its inaugural release, the full-length #1-4. His relocation from New Zealand to London in 2000 aligned with the appearance of the 3" CD Live (At Synesthesia), a collaboration with Fennesz. Getxo followed in 2001, and the next year Parlane united with Eddie Provost and Mattin to create Sakada, whose album Undistilled appeared shortly afterward. In 2003 he supplied material to Antiopic’s “Allegorical Power Series,” a sequence of free MP3 releases examining the “potential of sound art in the context of and as a response to global injustice.” Iris, released in 2004, marked his debut on the Touch label operated by Jon Wozencroft and Mike Harding; that association persisted with the 2006 album Jessamine.
