Rough Red consists of five musicians who share vocal duties throughout their performances. John Fegan plays harmonica and acoustic guitar, Peter Harvey handles keyboards and accordion, John Barr covers bass guitar, Steve Tyson contributes acoustic and electric guitars along with Dobro and mandolin, and Dave Parnell supplies percussion and drums. The ensemble’s style merges Aussie folk with country-rock influences.

By 1996 the Australian outfit had drawn growing notice from both critics and audiences. Rough Red became the first Australian band invited to Denmark’s Skagen Festival and spent the same year touring extensively across Europe.

The group finished its debut album, Better Red Than Dead, in 1999. A second release, Seeing Red, followed, and the third album, Rough Red Uncorked, reached stores in 2001. Songs appearing on the initial record include “Long Train Running,” “I Don’t Like These Tears,” “Cause We Were Lovers,” and “Backstage Desperado.”

Rough Red secured a Top Five single that led the Australian CMT charts, earned Album of the Week honors from one of Ireland’s largest rock stations, built an international audience, appeared before sold-out festival crowds, and placed several music videos into CMT rotation.
