Born Roxanne Tataei in London to a Jamaican mother and an Iranian father, retro-soul singer Rox blends a style reminiscent of Lauryn Hill with echoes of Amy Winehouse. Her introduction to music came through church as a child. By age ten she had already begun touring and performing via the National Youth Music Theatre, later forming a jazz trio as her first band during high school. While appearing live with DJ/producer Mark Ronson in 2007, she assembled her own band, and the following year she featured on Nitin Sawhney’s “Distant Dreams.” Supporting Daniel Merriweather on tour in 2009 drew attention, yet her appearance on the U.K. television program Later…with Jools Holland generated the strongest reaction, prompting MTV UK and the BBC to name her an artist to watch. Both her 2010 debut album, Memoirs, and its lead single, “My Baby Left Me,” were released on the Rough Trade label.
