Biography

Roy draws from the foundational mix of mythic Americana and loose-limbed rock & roll first shaped by Bob Dylan and the Band, while also echoing the approaches of Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, and My Morning Jacket. The group fuses jagged post-Pavement indie rock with folk and country touches, creating music that nods to earlier eras without being bound by them. For more than ten years, singer-guitarist Brian Cook and drummer Dave Verellen anchored the Seattle post-hardcore outfit Botch, known for its weighty riffs and dramatic shifts in meter. In 2002 the pair launched Roy as a side project alongside singer-guitarist Ben Verellen and bassist Mike Cooper. They took the name from the modest rural community outside Tacoma where Dave Verellen resided and served as a firefighter. The band issued its first recording, the Tacomatose EP, in 2003 and followed it with the full-length Big City Sin and Small Town Redemption the next year. After extensive touring in support of those releases, Roy paused activities so that Cook and Ben Verellen could concentrate on their other venture, These Arms Are Snakes, a heavier math-rock unit recalling Botch’s intensity. The original lineup reassembled in 2005 to compose and track its sophomore album, Killed John Train, which Lujo Records issued in spring 2006.
