Formed in January 1998 in Bakersfield, California, Royal Ruckus arose from the partnership of Michael Walker (aka Flatline) and Jamey Bennett (aka Chunjay). Their lyrics drew on Christian themes while embracing broad absurdity, grounding the sound in hip-hop yet folding in punk, ska, techno, and any further styles they elected to add. The album Microphones appeared first in 1998, followed by the self-released Love Us or Leave Us in 1999 and the EP Not What You Expect in 2000. Also issued that year was the best-of collection Sweatin' to the Oldies.
