The Royal Scots Dragoon Guard carried the official title of Scotland's senior regiment together with the Queen's only regular cavalry. Its Pipes and Drums section drew its lineage from the trumpet and kettledrum units attached to the earliest military guards. An ensemble that could reasonably be termed a band first appeared in 1777, whereas the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, under the name by which they later became known, originated in 1971 via the merger of the 3rd Carabiniers (the Prince of Wales Dragoon Guards) and the Royal Scots Greys. Their rendering of pipe melodies reached the pop-music audience in 1972 through the number one single "Amazing Grace," which topped the charts in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and South Africa. Universal records issued the group's later album Spirit of the Glen in 2007.
