Emily Beanblossom, the singer and songwriter from Olympia, Washington, adopted Ruby Fray as her solo alias in 2011 to mark projects separate from her ensemble work. Active in the Olympia circuit through outfits including Turf Surgery, Legs the Crab, Karczol, and additional groups, she earned her strongest notice as lead singer of the boisterous noise-rock unit Christmas. After wrapping a lengthy national trek with that band, she withdrew briefly to her family farm and began shaping the murkier, earthier textures that would define Ruby Fray. While still playing Christmas dates and launching a small soap-making venture, she started offering bare solo sets of the new material. In 2012 she moved from Olympia to Austin, Texas, and soon increased the frequency of Ruby Fray performances there. K Records issued her debut album Pith that spring; the record paired her goth-tinged indie songs with contributions from the label’s Olympia circle, among them members of LAKE, Angelo Spencer, Calvin Johnson, and several of her Christmas bandmates. Once based in Austin, she cut the next Ruby Fray album with musicians drawn from These Are Words, Ghetto Ghouls, Legs the Crab, Hotegia, and Clayface. Prompted by the city’s wildlife, Grackle appeared in September 2014.
