Biography
Born on 7 December 1918 in Delevan, New York, Lyle F. Dedrick first earned teaching credentials at Fredonia College in New York, then pursued composition studies under Paul Geston and Stefan Wolpe. His initial professional work came as a trumpeter with Dick Stabile’s band, after which he performed with Red Norvo, Claude Thornhill, and Ray McKinley. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s he served as a trumpeter and arranger for NBC Television as well as various New York studios. In 1971 Dedrick joined the faculty of the Manhattan College of Music, later advancing to director of jazz studies. His playing and writing remain rooted in the traditional swing idiom.
