Japanese pop singer and actress Ryoko Hirosue entered the entertainment industry after being selected at 14 for a cosmetics modeling campaign. Like many Japanese idols of the period, she was promptly steered toward simultaneous singing and acting commitments. Her debut single from 1997, “Maji de Koi Suru 5-Byou Mae,” and the immediate follow-up “Daisuki” were buoyant, sunlit pop tracks that propelled the 16-year-old to overnight fame. The album Arigatou, released alongside them, also performed strongly; its straightforward, unaffected pop approach stood in welcome relief against the synth-laden Eurobeat productions of Tetsuya Komuro then ruling the domestic charts. This musical success, paired with her prize-winning performance in the comedy-drama series Beach Boys, established her as one of the year’s standout new figures.

In 1998 the single “Jeans” appeared, hinting at a deliberate shift toward a more grown-up persona, while the 1999 album Private made evident that her management was prioritizing a transition into serious dramatic roles over sustaining the youthful momentum of her initial releases. A collection of singles and B-sides arrived in 1999, followed in 2000 by the single “Kajitsu,” yet by then her acting path was already advancing. Her first international screen appearance came in 2001 with Luc Besson’s Wasabi, effectively marking the close of her recording career aside from the later remix project RH Remix, which included contributions from Stereolab’s Tim Gane. The best-of compilation Perfect Collection was issued in 2002.
