Biography
Sabïre, pronounced Sah-Beer, operate as an "acid metal" band headquartered in Sydney, Australia. Their chosen descriptor evokes the corrosive element while signaling "a drop of acid in the dark" through modulated guitars, wet production, and biting lyrics. Singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer Scarlett Monastyrski launched the project in December 2010 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, selecting its name from a fictional superhero in one of his fantasy stories. He tested multiple configurations across two years before pausing activity and relocating to Sydney, Australia, where he assembled a more adaptable yet disciplined roster that keeps evolving. After several years of local rehearsals and shows, the group independently issued its seven-song debut EP, Gates Ajar, in 2018. March 2024 brought the release of a 2020 concert recording titled Live in Hamburg, followed in June by Jätt, the band's first studio album.
Scarlett Monastyrski convened Sabïre's original lineup in December 2010, aiming then and since to recruit players who could execute any guitar ideas that arose naturally. He worked with assorted musicians over two years yet remained dissatisfied with the results, prompting his 2013 emigration to Sydney, where he assembled a live unit that aligned closely with his musical intent. Performances there began with drummer Paul Coben, his enduring partner ever since, guitarist Ivor Radocaj, and bassist Zoran Mrakic. Sabïre issued the seven-track EP Gates Ajar digitally in 2018; the metal press hailed it across the board. Monastyrski applied the "acid metal" tag to the sound and took the quartet on tour, after which several labels licensed and re-released the EP over the following years. The single "Mistress Mistress" surfaced in 2020 with a metal cover of the Eagles' "Life in the Fast Lane" as its B-side, while the band worked across Western and Southern Europe and Australia. "Ice Cold Lust" arrived as a single in 2021.
Two years afterward the 2020 tour document Live in Hamburg appeared via Bandcamp. In 2024, more than a decade after Monastyrski's move to Australia, Sabïre delivered Jätt, its debut long-player for Listenable Records, in June. The guitarist produced, mixed, and mastered the album, whose songs had taken shape over several years; Coben was the only other musician present in the studio, although Radocaj and Mrakic continued in the touring lineup.
