Two idiosyncratic talents from the Buckeye State joined forces in Sad Planets. Patrick Carney, longtime drummer of the Black Keys, teams with vocalist and multi-instrumentalist John Petkovic, whose earlier bands include Death of Samantha, Cobra Verde, Guided by Voices, and Sweet Apple. The duo’s music offers an inventive, wide-ranging brand of rock that folds in psychedelia, glam, prog, and garage textures; sweeping, panoramic melodies ride atop arrangements that clash thunderous percussion and rugged guitars with layers of keyboards that range from melodic to jarring. Petkovic’s singing delivers the scale and projection of a stadium frontman while retaining the gritty, heartfelt directness of a basement performer.

Both musicians grew up in Akron, Ohio, and first crossed paths there in 1999, when Carney was nineteen; they were introduced by Ralph Carney, Patrick’s uncle and a versatile player who had worked with Cobra Verde. Years later, during a break from the Black Keys while Carney and Dan Auerbach explored separate ventures, Carney contacted Petkovic about creating new songs. Although Petkovic had moved to Cleveland and Carney to Nashville, they returned to Akron to track the material. Petkovic handled lead vocals, guitars, and synthesizers while Carney played bass, drums, and keyboards; the sessions also featured multi-instrumentalist Steve Clements and, on the track “Just Landed,” guitarist J Mascis, Petkovic’s bandmate from Sweet Apple. The resulting eleven-song set, Akron, Ohio, appeared on Tee Pee Records in April 2019.
