Since 1990 Mary Lorson has served as frontwoman for the indie rock band Madder Rose, lending it her taintly sweet vocals. Seeking an additional creative channel, she stepped away from the group in 1997 and, by early 2000, introduced the solo outlet Saint Low. There she reshaped the sharp indie textures of her earlier work into a pronounced jazzy character accented by funkadelic grooves and sleek pop hooks. A five-piece ensemble backs her, consisting of bassist Stahl Caso, violinist Joe Myer, pianist Michael Stark, vocalist Jennie Stearns, and drummer Zaun Marshburn. Saint Low signed to Thirsty Ear and delivered its self-titled album in summer 2000. Lorson spent the following year touring, sharing stages with Willard Grant Conspiracy and performing at SXSW. Between those live commitments she and Saint Low recorded in the studio; the resulting tracks appear on Tricks For Dawn, issued in March 2002.
