Sakala Brothers

Origin: U.S.A
Listen on Coda
Zambian television and radio commercials have long relied on the Sakala Brothers’ compositions as familiar background material. Their catalog features the “Angoni Theme Song” and “Puteni Ichimela,” the latter a bittersweet homage to the Zambian national soccer team. At the Lukesha Playhouse Theater the Sakala Brothers shared a multinational stage with Zambian musician Brian Zanji, the Zambian vocal group Amashiwi, and British musicians Nathan Thompson and Sarah Robins. The concert inaugurated a week-long Zambia-United Kingdom Cooperation celebration and was subsequently issued on CD as ODI in 1999. In December 2000 the Sakala Brothers, alongside Keith Mutale and St. Michael, were presented with a Ngome award from Africa Alive! as “the most socially conscious artist in the fight against AIDS.”
